For the first time in Germany, the Bundesamt für Zentrale Dienste und Offene Vermögensfragen (BADV) Provenance Database provides detailed documentation of the results of research on the provenances of artworks which are currently in the possession of the Federal Republic of Germany and were previously owned by the former German Reich. With the aid of links and search functions, the database provides interested parties with a comprehensive overview of the provenance of the artworks, with particular regard to previous owners and collectors. The background to the creation of this comprehensive database is the commitment given by the Federal Republic of Germany at the Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets (1998) to research and disclose the provenance of artworks which may have formerly been Jewish property.
The creation of the database has the goal of underscoring the efforts of the Federal Republic of Germany to provide transparency and to act in accordance with its responsibilities with regard to these artworks, while at the same time providing an innovative service tool for all citizens with an interest in art and provenance research.
